Australia’s V8 Supercar series has traditionally been a two-horse race, with Ford and GM’s Australian subsidiary, Holden, duking it out on the tracks of Oz. The 2013 season has seen the arrival of Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, although the ranks of the series are still dominated by Fords and Holdens. Next season, a fifth manufacturer will take to tracks like Bathurst, Sandown, and Circuit of the Americas—Volvo.
It’s a sad day for our friends down under. According to a story published in The Australian, the American brand that’s been building cars Down Under since the 1920s will cease production of Australian-specific models by October of 2016. The closure will result in the loss of 1200 jobs, although Ford would retain 1500 Australians for product development positions.
Oh, if only we had a dollar for every time that phrase was uttered in the two-year run-up to the USGP. We recall smiling at the interesting relationship our media colleagues have with data. Which is to say, if a meme is out there and gets repeated enough, it becomes “true.” Now Formula Money, a consultancy, has reported on 2012 race attendance.
The VF Commodore sports a cleaner, less aggressive exterior. As the Chevrolet SS will essentially be a Commodore with new front and rear fascias, this should give you a good idea of just what America’s next sports sedan will look like. Our opinion? It’s not going to be a bad looking vehicle. And more importantly, because its a rear-drive Australian car, it should be an utter hoot to drive.
The Mercedes-Benz factory team has unveiled its latest creation, destined to battle in the 2013 Formula 1 series. Mercedes is claiming this car, like the other vehicles we’ve seen so far, is an evolution of last year’s competitor.
Called the RB9, it’s a safe bet that this Renault-powered entry, penned by aerodynamic genius Adrian Newey will be a strong challenger in nearly ever race. That’s particularly true when there’s a three-time world champion behind the wheel of one of the cars.
The Sahara Force India Formula 1 team has revealed their fighter for the 2013 season. While its appearance hasn’t changed much, Technical Director Andrew Green states, “It’s a brand new car from the ground-up.”
The Australian V8 Supercar series has announced plans to race at Austin’s Circuit of The America’s starting in 2013. It will join the revived Formula 1 United States Grand Prix as well as a round of the MotoGP World Championship, meaning that Texas will soon be boasting some of the best racing on the planet. Texas Governor Rick Perry and Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh made the announcement.
Rumors have been swirling about a Chevrolet-branded return of our favorite former Pontiac, the G8. We already know that GM has tapped the Australian-market Commodore (nee G8) for its upcoming cop car offering, and new rumors indicate that a public version may be in the works, too, as a possible Caprice (with a Caprice SS for the power-hungry). We’re on record as being huge G8 fans, and think the possibility of this new Caprice is, in a word, bitchin’.
