Epic Events You Can Drive: One Lap Of America

One Lap Of America is a set of driving competitions mixed with a non-competitive road trip. It starts and finishes in South Bend, IN, from whence you drive 3245 miles during the week to compete at tracks in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and back home again in Indiana. There are 18 planned track events, of which 13 are time trials on road racing circuits. There are three drag races and two skid pad events. Scoring is based on overall ranking (not time) in each event. Since you need to drive (transit) between events, One Lap is for street legal cars. There are 13 classes. For our report on OLOA we engaged the eyewitness team of Tracy Ramsey and Jason Cange (Team Blenderblaster), who ran this year’s event in a 2012 Nissan 370Z sponsored by Winding Road Racing. The 370Z fits into SSGT2 (cars under $50k) Big Bore (engines over 3.5 liters). Up against Corvettes, Mustangs and Challengers, you would think they would be at a disadvantage. But, as we know, what you think and what actually happens can be different once the rubber hits the track.

Track Decal of the Week: Road America

As auto racing was beginning to gain popularity in the United States in the 1940s and early 1950s, most events were held on public streets. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s open road course was among many across the country that played host to numerous SCCA events throughout the era. After legislation brought a ban to racing on public roads due to safety concerns brought on by a crash at Watkins Glen in 1952, a man by the name of Clif Tufte brought together members of the Chicago Region of the Sports Car Club of America to develop plans to build a permanent private road course in Elkhart Lake.

Gallery: Porsche LMK 917

It’s hard to determine what attracts us to this 917 replica more – the fact that this is the only 917 clad in the 1971 Sebring-winning Martini livery that builder WerkzCars ever produced, or the seemingly incongruous setting of the serene suburban America backdrop used for the photos. One thing’s for sure – it’s a pretty fantastic way to wake the neighbors. Or rather, it will be, once you add an engine and transmission.

Chomping at the bit to drive the new Stingray? Yeah, we are too. Hennessey Performance, though, apparently can’t sit still and wait, and has gone ahead and announced its HPE700 Corvette, slated to debut before Chevrolet can come out with its hi-po Corvette ZR1.

Video: Krohn Racing Ferrari 458 Crashes Hard, Red Flags Le Mans Practice

The highlight of today was the four-hour free practice session, which featured solid action until it ended in early and dramatic fashion, as Tracy Krohn slammed his Ferrari 458 Italia into the wall. Coming out of the right-hander after the Dunlop Bridge, Krohn appeared to lose the 458’s tail, spinning out onto the damp grass and gravel and spearing into a tire wall. The damage to the wall was so severe that the session was red flagged and eventually ended altogether.

Winding Road Video: 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 — POV Test Drive

Oddly, the Challenger’s suspension felt softer and less poised than the Chrysler 300 SRT8 we tested back in May. Regardless of which of the three suspension modes we set the Dodge in, there was more vertical movement and roll than in the 300’s equivalent mode. The sedan offered up a flatter, grippier handling experience that instilled more confidence as we pushed down the road.

Update: 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo

You’ll be forgiven at this point for thinking the little 500T is a bit misguided or confused. It isn’t. Get it out on the road, and you’ll discover that Fiat has struck the perfect blend with the turbocharged 500. It isn’t an Abarth for the speed-averse—it’s a 500 for the speed freak.
