Last week, Dodge unveiled what it's calling "the future of electrified muscle." The Charger Daytona SRT is an electric performance coupe meant to carry the torch passed by the outgoing Charger and Challenger. This new EV is touted as being faster than a Hellcat.
Naturally aspirated V12, 715hp, four seats - an SUV is not what you would think of when hearing these things. Ferrari has revealed the Purosangue; it's first SUV, and we love it.
While the new M3 sedan and M4 coupe are highly capable on the racetrack and adept at handling daily driver duties, over the years, the steady increase in both physical size and price tags of those cars have caused some hemming and hawing from BMW fans who long for the simpler days of the 2002 and the E30 M3. But fear not, faithful enthusiasts – BMW has not forgotten about you. The M2 is coming, and it’s shaping up to be a very compelling option.
Perhaps best known for the Rally Fighter, a Road Warrior-esque V8-powered high speed offroader, Local Motors recently set their sights on designing a new street legal, track-focused sports car. However, instead of giving Local Motors’ own designers the task of creating the concept, they instead turned to the enthusiast community, holding a design challenge to create a light weight, modular, and affordable sports car based around platform guidelines provided by Local Motors engineers. After receiving more than 200 entries, Local Motors chose the SF-01 Street Fighter, penned by Greg Thompson. Featuring inboard suspension, tubular bodywork, the ability to accept engines ranging from an inline four cylinder to a V8, and some eye catching bodywork, it’s not hard to see how Greg’s concept became a favorite amongst the community and the Local Motors judges.
Like it or not, the automobile is about to change permanently and dramatically. That change will be built upon the transition from driver-operated to driverless cars.
Honoring the 60th anniversary of Ferrari’s North American presence, the Italian automaker has decided to celebrate the occasion by producing a very limited quantity of new open top V12 powered, front engine supercars which will be known as the F60 America. Clad in an appropriately patriotic red, white and blue color scheme, the F60 America will pay homage to another great tradition: Just ten examples are scheduled to be built, as was the case with the 1967 275 GTS4 NART Spider, which car importer Luigi Chinetti specifically requested from Enzo Ferrari for his US clients.
With every lofty claim made and delivered upon, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk inches closer to becoming a modern day Howard Hughes (sans the socially crippling OCD). Back in September, Musk proclaimed that Tesla would be producing fully autonomous vehicles by the close of the decade, an assertion that seemed lofty at best. But at last night’s unveiling of the newest product from Tesla Motors, the all-wheel-drive Model S “D”, not only did Musk unveil the quickest production sedan from 0-60 mph that money can currently buy (in the form of the top-spec P85D), he also debuted the semi-driverless operation features of the new car – features installed in every new car rolling out of the factory as of two weeks ago – by letting each P85D at the event drive itself around a road course set up at Hawthrone Municipal Airport.
Audi research and development board member Ulrich Hackenberg had some choice details to share with the UK’s Car magazine, explaining in no uncertain terms that not only will the new R8 share its platform with the Lamborghini Huracán, it will also be available with a choice of gas, hybrid and full electric powertrains.
Back in March, Porsche announced it was reviving the GTS badge on the Boxster and Cayman models, the first to wear the emblem since the 1963 Carrera 904. Now the automaker has decided to apply the GTS treatment to the venerable 911 with four new iterations of the sports car that offer more power, uprated suspension, additional features, unique aesthetics, and perhaps most importantly to some, a more viable alternative for those who want a 991 GT3 but demand a manual gearbox.
The Z4 GT3 has enjoyed a fairly successful racing career since its debut in 2010, but it appears that BMW Motorsport is not content to rest on its laurels. Accordingly, the Z4 GT3 will bow out after the 2015 season to make way for the new M6 GT3, which will use a race spec version of the road-going M6’s 560 horsepower, 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8, and will be available for customer teams to order next year.
VW appears to be taking a page out of the playbook of sports racers like the Radical SR3 and the open wheeled Formula 1000 series at this year’s Paris Auto Show with the debut of the XL Sport. Taking the architecture of the low drag, light weight XL1, the XL Sport ditches the XL1’s diesel-electric hybrid powertrain in favor of a 1198cc, 197 horsepower twin cylinder mill taken from the Ducati 1199 Superleggera sport bike and places it in the middle of the chassis, creating a sports car that revs to 11,000 rpm with a top speed of 168 miles per hour.
Sources indicate that preparations could be underway for Ford’s factory GT program to return to Le Mans in 2016 – the 50th anniversary brand’s victory at the famed circuit with the Ford GT40 Mk II.
At this week’s Paris Auto Show, Automobili Lamborghini unveiled their newest creation, the Asterion, which gets its name from a minotaur in Greek mythology. It’s a significant departure from Lamborghinis of the past, not only in its visual presentation but also in how it delivers its performance. The Asterion, much like the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, nods to the inevitable mandate of electric-assisted progress with the inclusion of a plug-in electric powertrain which supplements its conventional gasoline powered engine. But rather than downplay what some might consider a compromise, Lamborghini instead chose to embrace the new tech, driving the car onto the stage with a soundtrack of nothing but camera shutters and jaws hitting the floor to usher in a new era of “silent extreme performance.”
After teasing us for months about their new, extremely limited production super sedan, Aston Martin has taken the wraps off the Lagonda, and “luxurious” doesn’t even begin to describe the level of opulence on hand in Aston Martin’s newest four seater.
When it comes to high performance news, the recent crowd favorite Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has been hogging a lot of headlines for the last few months – and for good reason. But while the Challenger makes for a great muscle car, if you’re looking for the most distilled high performance available, it’s more likely to be offered from a platform designed to be a sports car from the ground up. The Corvette C7 is such a platform. When GM announced that the new Z06 would be the most powerful GM production car ever produced, and that a new eight-speed automatic transmission that offered shifts as fast as Porsche’s PDK gearbox was going to be along for the ride, expectations were high. But to look at the performance figures revealed by General Motors today, it looks like they might not have been high enough.
Take a gander at the newest BMW M3 fighter on the block. The new C63 takes after the recently unveiled Mercedes-AMG GT in several interesting ways, including its new title as a Mercedes-AMG product, the hand built, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that propels both vehicles, and the addition of an “S” trim level to the C63 model lineup, which boosts handling and performance features even further than the standard C63.
Not so long ago, Rolls-Royce executives dismissed the possibility of creating a crossover that would be adorned with the Spirit of Ecstasy on the hood. Now, after watching other exclusive marques like Bentley and Lamborghini prepare similar vehicles for launch within the next two to three years, it appears Rolls-Royce may now see a case for a $200,000 crossover, as CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes now says such a vehicle is currently being seriously considered.
While recent reports indicate that while Google’s car is still far from being ready for primetime, Elon Musk is confident that his company’s car will be fully autonomous by the close of this decade. Speaking with Nikkei, Tesla CEO also asserted that company’s cars will be partially self-driving in just three years. Musk went on to elaborate about the plan to get their technology from where it is today to those fairly lofty goal in such a seemingly short amount of time.
According to sources at Autocar, a more potent version of the 5.0-liter V8 used in the upcoming Lexus RC F is for an upcoming top-spec performance version of the GS sport sedan, which has been recently seen testing on the Nürburgring. Poised to take on the likes of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, while the GS F looks to be a step in the right direction for those seeking Japan’s answer to the super sedan, it also appear that the new car may still have its work cut out for it.
A fair amount of dismay was generated when Mercedes-Benz announced the imminent demise of the vaunted SLS. AMG’s most hardcore sports car might not have had the most refined manners in comparison to some of its contemporaries, but it made up for it with heaps of personality. So why toss it after just a handful of years on sale? Soon after we learned that the days were numbered for the SLS, we learned why – Daimler needed to make room for a new sports car, one that was poised to take on the Porsche 911 in a much more direct fashion. Now, after a long string of teasers and rumors, the company has finally revealed the Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S, and there’s a lot more to this new coupe than just a pretty face.
After a succession of teaser images and rumors, the British automaker has finally taken the wraps off their newest creation, the XE, the brand’s BMW 3-Series fighting mid-sized sport sedan. During today’s unveiling, Jaguar pointed out that this sports sedan would be the “backbone of the business”, and accordingly, the XE is not simply a reboot of the X-Type, but rather a clean slate, aluminum-intensive design that utilizes the latest and greatest in Jaguar’s constantly evolving bag of tricks.
After months, perhaps years of anticipation, Mazda has unveiled the design of the all-new fourth generation Miata.
