The strangeness of bike category-think.
Is the price tag worth it?
Sam Altman is Chairman of Y Combinator, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm know for funding Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, Reddit and DoorDash. Y Combinator’s portfolio has an estimated value in excess of $80B. Maybe he knows some things of value. He happens to be a racer, so we naturally were even more interested in his thoughts.
We’ve compiled a list of some of Winding Road staff favorites of places to eat in Austin when you are here for a race weekend. Mind you, this is by no means exhaustive, and even this author admits we’ve left off some obvious (and not-so-obvious) locales (and we’re not even going to get in the BBQ argument).
We all know that “April showers bring May flowers.” And realistically March is pretty wet in some parts of the country, as well. Since it is the season for racing in the rain, we thought we’d pull together a little bit of instructional video for you.
Winding Road Team TFB supported two Japanese drivers in the recent MX-5 Cup Challenge at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. We worked with Tetsuya Yamano, the Japanese MX-5 Cup champion and Takashi Oi, a journalist from Best Car magazine, as well as crew members from Mazda Japan.
A customer recently walked into our Austin store and said “I’m doing a track day next week and I want to have the concepts in my head. What book do you recommend?”
The Pirelli World Challenge TC (Touring Car) class is shaping up to be quite interesting in 2017. While multiple makes and models will run, there is a good chance that the fat part of the field will be made up of BMW M235i Racing cars. BMW finished first in two elements of the 2016 TC championship, the drivers points and the team points, which bodes well for drivers running the M235i in 2017. We’ve profiled the car.
We highly recommend off-season cycling, and possibly not for the reasons you might think. Here are three reasons cycling is a must for racers:
If you really enjoy racing, this car is the ticket to some intense competition. For 2017, the Global MX-5 Cup racer will run in Pirelli World Challenge TCA as well as the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup sanctioned by IndyCar.
With the onset of winter, many of our readers are thinking more about snow than rain. But soon enough the 2017 season will start, first in Florida, Texas and California and then moving northwards. You can get ready now…
We love racing, and part of what we love is hanging out after the race at places like Siebkens or Turn 12 or Bubba’s with our racer friends talking about the day’s events. In the early season, temperatures are cool and we like to wear a comfy and stylish sweater for apres-race “discussions”.
Chris Workman is a race fan, certified car guy, and father of three. As Chris explains it, his passion for all things automotive began when he attended an IndyCar race at Road America as a boy with his brother and father. Now Chris would like to provide a similar pathway for future gearheads to fall in love cars by way of The Longest Day, a self-published book that captures this moment through eye of a young boy who falls in love with racing through a bonding experience with his father. But in order to get the project off the ground, Chris needs your help.
Although Europe is the second-smallest continent, it’s one of the best places to visit if you’re planning a continental road trip anytime soon. Road trips in Europe are always packed with amazing sights, sounds and excursions, and you’re likely to experience some wonderful memories that will keep the trip alive in your mind. If you adore driving as well, a European road trip will be just the ticket, as it’ll give you a chance to drive your way across the continent.
As auto racing was beginning to gain popularity in the United States in the 1940s and early 1950s, most events were held on public streets. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s open road course was among many across the country that played host to numerous SCCA events throughout the era. After legislation brought a ban to racing on public roads due to safety concerns brought on by a crash at Watkins Glen in 1952, a man by the name of Clif Tufte brought together members of the Chicago Region of the Sports Car Club of America to develop plans to build a permanent private road course in Elkhart Lake.
Our friends at Motorsport Retro bring us this collection of fanastic images from last month’s inaugural Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a massive vintage racing event held by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association. The famed race track hosted more than 500 of the world’s finest and most historic racecars as they competed on the recently reconfigured road course as well as running exhibition events on the famed 2.5 mile oval.
Being the semi-literate individuals we are, when we’re not out at the track or hustling down our favorite backroads, the staff here at Winding Road have been known to read an occasional book or two when the urge strikes us. Summertime has a way of offering more time for such endeavors, be it through increased travel or simply carving out time to relax and enjoy the warm weather, so we thought we’d share a few of our favorite reads with you.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the team has been hard at work putting together the documentary chronicling Winding Road Racing’s journey to, and participation in, last year’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Piloting a Ford Mustang Boss 302S, the crew took on the longest race on the 2013 race season calendar, and as an added bonus, you may recall that they did pretty well in their class. Due out in April, you can check out the trailer for the upcoming film below. We’re biased, of course, but we think you’ll really enjoy it.

Project CARS is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios, who are responsible for the Shift series of Need For Speed titles. What got our attention were some of the cars you’ll be able to drive, and the modeling of real-world race tracks.
