There is no question that the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the current king of the Camaro heap. It’s supercharged 6.2-liter small block V-8 churns out 580 horsepower, making it the most powerful Camaro of all time. However, the mighty ZL1 could soon have a challenger for its crown if a recent photo from the forums of Camaro5 is any indication.
Camaro5 user “showstopper” was installing the diffuser on a ZL1 when something particularly revealing was discovered on one of the mounting brackets. As you can see, clearly stamped on the bracket are the markings “Z28”. There have been rumors swirling around the internet for years about the rebirth of the Camaro Z28 and there is strong evidence—especially when you consider this mounting bracket discovery—that Chevy will eventually revive one of its most storied monikers.
There is also some indication that the new Z28 could be launched as a track-focused model in the same vein as the Ford Mustang Boss 302, and a February 2011 report on Jalopnik indicates that there is some subtantial merit to this rumor. In the late 1960’s when the Z28 was first introduced, sharp handling and racing pedigree were built into the car’s very DNA. Checking the “Z28” box on the options list would transform your Camaro with a unqiue engine, improved suspension, and quicker steering, along with a host of other upgrades. Looking now at the current Camaro lineup, it seems logical that the Z28 would be a lightweight track weapon rather than an full on muscle car—that base is already being covered by the ZL1.
We’ll have to wait and see what becomes of this new development, but until then—gearheads, rejoice.
