Rumors: Industry Report—Koenigsegg’s Engines And Airbags

News I By Doran Dal Pra I February 10, 2012
Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg is reportedly working on a cam-less engine according to a recent post on MotorAuthority. The cam-less engine design is already being put to use in Formula 1 engines and will provide a wide range of benefits including a substantial improvement in fuel economy and infinitely variable valve lift. While the technology isn’t fully ready for release in road cars—there are a number of elements like reliability and noise that still need improvement—it shows that besides making some of the world’s most outrageous supercars, Koenigsegg is looking to push the technological envelope as well.
That same report on MotorAuthority is also reporting the due to strict United States airbag regulations, Koenigsegg isn’t being granted permission to bring its Agera line of supercars to our shores. The company is working on applying for an exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but if the Pagani Huayra and its failed exemption are any example, its unclear if Koenigsegg will be able to pull off the same trick.
With 1115 horsepower on tap in the Agera R, it would be a shame if Koenigsegg’s ultimate road machine was shown the door before it even walked through it.
