Gamer: Need For Speed Rivals To Arrive On PS4 And XBox One
It’s easy to get lost in the scrum that is the world of racing video games. Besides the hardcore sims, like iRacing, there’s
Forza Motorsport on Microsoft’s platform and
Gran Turismo on Sony’s system. There’s also the
GRiD series, the new
DriveClub game for the PS4, and a raft of other, smaller titles.
One series that’s struggled just below the top ranks of
Forza and
GT is
Need For Speed. The old series was making waves three-and-a-half years before the original
Gran Turismo arrived on our shores, but a string of lackluster or overly arcade-like titles and paired with a few critical misses have taken the shine off this old series.
Need For Speed Rivals, due out on PC, XBox 360, and Playstation 3 on November 19, takes the series back to the halcyon days of Hot Pursuit, when the racing was between drivers and police.
Gamers can choose to play as a hoon or a member of the law, with access to a wide, open world. Depending on which team you side with, you’ll face a number of challenges, with racers aiming to take risks and escape police pursuit all in the name of fame, while LEOs work as a team to bring down hot-rodding racers.
Depending on which side you choose, you’ll have access to 11 gadgets. Racers get turbo boosts, jammers, and EMPs to aid their escapes, while the cops have access to shockwaves (not sure what these are), roadblocks, and helicopters.
Ferrari will be featured prominently in this new title, marking the first time the Italian make has been featured in seven years.
NFSR also packs the standard suite of racing features. Stats are widely available for racers to share, while unique personalization options should allow players to truly set their cars apart from the fast-moving herd.
Need For Speed Rivals will also be available on the new XBox One and Playstation 4 when they debut later this year.
