Vote Tally: Favorite Racing Transmission

Features, Racing I By Winding Road Staff I September 13, 2017

You may recall that last week we surveyed our readers about their preferred transmission interface for racing. We promised we'd share the results, so here they are. Basically, about 50% of people prefer a traditional manual, H-pattern gearbox and about 50% prefer something else:

In keeping with this, these drivers are predominantly right-footed brakers:

A few interesting observations:

  1. We don't know if some of the preference for H-pattern gearboxes comes from people preferring classes where that is the only option
  2. About 50% of respondents are primarily track day drivers and 50% are wheel-wheel racers or autocrossers. The preference for H-pattern gearboxes remained almost identical to what we show above when we just looked a wheel-wheel racers.
  3. We don't know how much of the preference for H-pattern gearboxes comes from limited experience with sequential 'boxes.
