Video: Sebastian Vettel, David Coulthard Tackle Russia’s Unfinished Sochi Circuit

In case you haven’t noticed, Formula 1 has been on a big kick when it comes to expansion into new markets. India, China, and the Middle East have been the biggest beneficiaries of this move, but for 2014 the F1 circus will be traveling to Russia.

The race will take place in Sochi, which is also hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. A 3.6-mile, 19-turn street circuit will weave its way through the Olympic Park, and past various competition venues. It should be very impressive.

That said, it’s not exactly finished yet. That hasn’t stopped Red Bull from dispatching brand ambassador David Coulthard and three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel from tackling the unfinished track behind the wheel of a couple Infinitis. Both drivers seem impressed with the speed and difficulty of the track.

The 2014 race will be the first Grand Prix in Mother Russia since 1914, when a contest was held in St. Petersburg. Tiny things like World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution ended the tradition before it could gain much traction.

An official date for the 2014 Russian Grand Prix hasn’t been announced yet. Sochi is warmer than most of the country, but it’s still in Russia. We’ll be betting on a summer race.
