Long before Vancouver’s planned Formula E car race this year was called off, city staff had internally identified plenty of potential red flags.
The Canadian newspaper Vancouver Sun obtained internal city hall communications, through a Freedom of Information request, which highlighted several risks, challenges and concerns with the proposal from a new organization called One Stop Strategy Group. The OSS Group was to be the promoter and organizer for what would have been Vancouver’s first time holding the Formula E Championship, an electric car race series that launched in 2014 and this season included 16 races in cities around the world.
This is a spectacular case of how not to promote a much-anticipate race. After just finishing it’s 8 season of around-the-world racing, Formula E has endured multiple debacles throughout it’s growing phase (Miami, Montreal, & London to name a few), so it’s not entirely surprising the young Series fell victim again to over-promises and under-deliveries.
