The Hot List: Volume 37

Features, Lifestyle I By John Beltz Snyder I May 11, 2012
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. Once, we were in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

We aim to bring you a list of the most interesting bits of information we run across. Ten worth-knowing-about things that may or may not be related directly to the world of cars, but all of which we think our typical enthusiast readers will be able to really dig into. We don’t know, from week to week, what will show up on this list, which is part of the fun for us and for you.

Read, enjoy, and comment. If you happen to know of something that you think would make for a good inclusion on next week’s list, drop us a line at [email protected].

Have you ever wondered what it would be like just to sit in a Formula 1 racecar? Well, it’s not as great as it would seem. Here Nico Rosberg demonstrates how a driver fits behind the ultra-complicated wheel of the machine.

Do you love your town or neighborhood? Now you can get a map of it printed on a blanket or napkin. We’ve always wanted to wipe our mouth with Kitchener, Ontario. Bonus points for being able to pretend you’re Godzilla walking across downtown.

We love Sprinters. We also have always kind of wanted to live in our car. Rock-It Ships creates custom tour vans for musicians who aren’t famous enough to warrant a tour bus, or who just want to have less of an environmental impact when they drive across the country.

Want to have some fun with your kids? Tell them you got an inflatable bounce room for the back yard. Then bust out this 85-foot obstacle course. When it’s set up, it’s drill time. No chow until you’re able to complete it blindfolded in 20 seconds while being sprayed with a fire hose, kiddos! Oh, and if you don’t already, make your children call you “Sir.”

We can’t tell you how glad we are that this exists. It’s a hovercraft that can fly! It can cruise several feet above the water, and can jump 20 feet in the air. Forget everything else we’ve ever wanted. This is our new fixation.

Han Solo is a scoundrel (and don’t forget nerfherder), but we still admire him. Now you can be just like him, and encase yourself in carbonite. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios during its Star Wars weekends (beginning May 18), you can pay $100 to get your preserved likeness in an 8-inch figurine.

If you get stranded in the desert, this book could save your life. It will tell you how to build shelter, find food and water, and avoid deadly animals. When you fail to do all that, you can eat the book, made from edible paper and ink, while you wait for death help to arrive.

Don’t you just hate wi-fi? Yeah, we do too. Coming next year, you’ll be able to block it with this nifty wallpaper. Now you don’t have to worry about pesky wireless signals penetrating your living room ever again. (Oh, it can also help keep unwanted visitors off your network.)

You know what would make that beer bratwurst with pretzel bread bun even tastier? Some mustard. Mustard with booze and bacon flavor in it.

Tudor, the official timing partner of Ducati, will be offering this Fastrider watch soon. It comes with a metal or leather strap and a second fabric strap, to suit your activity. It features self-winding mechanical chronograph movement, 60-second, 30-minute, and 12-hour totalizers. Plus, it looks amazing.
