The Hot List: Volume 18

Features, Lifestyle I By John Beltz Snyder I December 16, 2011
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. Once, we were in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

We aim to bring you a list of the most interesting bits of information we run across. Ten worth-knowing-about things that may or may not be related directly to the world of cars, but all of which we think our typical enthusiast readers will be able to really dig into. We don’t know, from week to week, what will show up on this list, which is part of the fun for us and for you.

Read, enjoy, and comment. If you happen to know of something that you think would make for a good inclusion on next week’s list, drop us a line at [email protected].

This first one was pointed out to us by WR reader, Steemo, in the comments section of last week’s Hot List. It’s a blender powered by gasoline. Nothing like the sweet smell of exhaust to go with that morning smoothie!

Who wouldn’t want a house with it’s very own missile silo/bunker? Nestled in the Adirondacks, it sits on 19.2 acres, and costs just $750,000. For a bit more, you can also have 10 more acreage, an aircraft hangar, runway, and a log cabin.

We love dogs. We love cars. Put them together in a happy video: boom. Pure gold.

Dress every day as if you’ll end up stranded in the wilderness. This belt costs less than $30, and contains 80 feet of paracord, perfect for that unexpected survival situation. When you sacrifice the belt to build your snares and shelter, make sure to save a length of cord to hold your pants up.

These are the perfect camping trailer for your next off-road vacation. Tvan campers are rugged, resistant to the elements, and can go pretty much anywhere your ORV can. Plus, they have a whole host of options to fit your camping needs.

The Aston Martin One-77 is a beautiful rare car. Have you ever wondered what goes into making such a special and coveted vehicle? Here, Wired shows how the One-77 is built.

Here’s a bit of unsafe craziness. It’s a video of a man inline-skating behind a riderless motorcycle in Pakistan. In traffic. “Don’t try this at home” goes without saying (and not just because you’d ruin the carpet).

Science, man! NASA is building a freaking harpoon it can shoot into comets to extract samples. There’s even a video explaining it. The best part (and Engadget even makes special note of this)—no Aerosmith.

Some more science for ya: Stratolaunch is building an airplane capable of ferrying passengers into Earth’s orbit. The builders are teaming up with—you guessed it—Elon Musk to make this happen by 2016.

The science just keeps comin’! These Louis Garneau Carbon Pro Team shoes are constructed with xylitol (the same sweetener used in your chewing gum) in the fabric, which is a refrigerant when it reacts with sweat, thus keeping your feet nice and cool as you pedal away to…wherever it is you pedal to. We can’t confirm that it also makes your shoes taste sweeter, but we like to think it does.
