Recap: The Images Of The 2013 Mille Miglia

Features I By Brandon Turkus I May 17, 2013
The Mille Miglia was a 1000-mile road race that went from Brescia, Italy to Rome and all the way back. Originally ran in 1927, the Mille lasted for 30 years, and was considered one of the most dangerous endurance races in the world, taking the lives of 56 people over 30 years.

The event is far safer today. And with the expanded role of social media, we’re able to follow along with the day’s events. We’ve put together 30 pictures, culled from Twitter, to give everyone a taste of the atmosphere at this year’s Mille. We’ve linked to the user that took the shot if you want to see more of that person. We’ve also linked to the individual tweet, if you want to jump in and retweet from your own account. Enjoy!

A pre-race shot. It’s been a cold, wet drive this year.

A trio of Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLRs running through the mountains. This is what a lot of money looks like.

The weather cleared briefly, but it wasn’t to last. Still a nice day for this 1955 MG.

Mercedes-Benz had a solid attendance when it came to SL Gullwings.

Like we said, it was cold.

Blue skies in the Ferrari camp.

The new Jaguar F-Type meets its great, great grandfather, the XK120.

While the competition is friendly, accidents do happen. This poor Fiat 600 is a prime example.

The roads have rarely been dry.

Another, much pricier incident. The Jaguar XK120 doesn’t look too bad, though.

While the Mille is for older cars, there are no shortage of newer cars parked nearby.

It’s amazing how much you need for a day on the road. There’s more than a few tools waiting to be loaded.

The scenery, despite the wet weather, has been pretty amazing so far. This 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR is flawless.

Getting ready to race in this classic XK120.

Arriving at the day’s final destination.

When its that cold and wet, it takes real bravery to put the top down.

That traffic cop has been mighty busy lately. This 1927 BNC was one of the brighter cars on display.

Nothing like a quick run to the bar.

This list wouldn’t be complete without a classic Ferrari at speed. This 500 Mondial is perfect.

We can think of few cars better for a hairpin than a classic British roadster, like this Austin-Healey.

We can’t decide what’s prettier, the background or the foreground.

A beautiful Alfa Romeo files past the crowds.

Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, and a bunch of other makes we can’t quite make out. The weather didn’t keep anyone away.

Now this is a proper support car. It even comes with a map of the route.

A flock of Gullwings.

Even with the rain pouring down, the race continued. These Alfa Romeo 6C drivers may be getting soaked, but we’d trade places with them any day.

The cars may be old like this Healey Silverstone, but they’re still plenty quick.

Is a "traffic jam" of Ferraris an appropriate unit of measure?

We didn’t know HIDs were available in pre-war cars!

These directions look easy to follow.
