Gallery: 1994 Citroën ZX Rallye-Raid

Cars, Features I By Winding Road Staff I January 28, 2014
The 1990s were marked by Citroën’s success in cross-country rallying, winning five consecutive constructors’ titles in the World Cup. After a promising start in 1990 (1st and 2nd place in the Baja Aragon with Vatanen and Ickx), the ZX rallye-raid prototypes established their credentials by chalking up several victories in 1991 and 1992. However, it was in 1993 that the marque established itself at the top of the championship, not relinquishing the title until after 1997.

This ZX Rallye-Raid was campaigned by Citroën Sport in the Atlas Rally in Morocco in 1994. Numbered Citroën Sport ZX 3 C326 and driven by Hubert Auriol and Gilles Picard, the car took third place overall. Competing in the prototype class, this car had little in common with a series ZX beyond its broad shape. In fact, it was an evolution of the Peugeot 405 T16, the Paris-Dakar winner in 1988 and 1990.

With very high ground clearance, the ZX Rallye-Raid is equipped with four-wheel drive and a mid-positioned engine mounted transversely. This is a type XU 15 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 330 bhp at 4,500 rpm. The gearbox is mounted transversely, with limited slip differential at front and rear, and the car has ventilated disc brakes on separate front and rear circuits controlled from the cockpit.

Want it for your own? Well, you’re in luck – it’s for sale by Artcurial Motorcars at their upcoming auction on February 7th at Salon Rétromobile, Paris, as Lot # 1-192
