When I competed against other race car drivers, I didn’t like many of them, but as I got to know them, I had a big Aha! moment: they’re human.
Now live on Bring a Trailer is a collection of not only one Porsche race car, but nine race-ready cars spanning three decades Porsche history.

The fact is, today sports car racing offers far more opportunities to land a paid ride and build a career as a professional race car driver.
Most people are familiar with insurance for their daily drivers, but what about insurance for race car drivers and their cars?
McLaren has debuted a car that seems to start out life as a race car, and then has a few bits thrown on to make it street-legal. Its price is somewhere in the sea of figures between a Cayman GT4 and Ford RS200 (or possibly more). Following in the footsteps of the 600LT, 570GT, and 570S: the 620R.
After spending a lifetime driving as fast as possible for a living, as well as operating a racing school for the past several years, I guess I am qualified to provide my opinion on the basics of driving fast!
Saleen’s GT4 offering was offically unvelied as a concept in Las Vegas last Friday. Based on their new Saleen 1 which competes in their own dedicated Saleen Cup Series, the specs point to it being quite a formidable chassis in world challenge next year. Excellent news: the new Mazda3 will do its FWD Mazda forefathers proud by running in TCR in 2020!
In the United States, Bryan Herta Autosport is the designated sales agent for Hyundai TCR customer race cars. The Veloster N TCR can be ordered for €135,000* plus shipping, with customer deliveries set to begin in March 2019.
Nissan has shown a new Leaf Nismo RC pure EV race car. The dual 120 kW motors can deliver 478 lb-ft of torque through an AWD system. But the big thing is that the extensive use of carbon fiber reduces the weight of the Leaf RC to 2690 lb. That torque:weight combo allows a 3.3 sec 0-60 time and the low CG should help with handling. We think it looks better than the street car version, too.
EV racers are on the way. You may end up driving one. Chances are you hate this idea. But, we want to suggest, don’t be so quick to judge.
John Allen is a Spec Miata and, in 2018, a Spec MX-5 Challenge pro driver. In Spec MX-5, he has been on pole twice in six races, demonstrating the skills he built on iRacing. He got his start in simulators and his quick transition from sims to the front of the pack in road racing caught our attention. This is a scenario we’ve seen before (e.g. with Mark Drennan and Glenn McGee), so we interviewed John to get his thoughts on making the transition from sims to “real” cars.
There are many ways to assess road racing cars. The obvious way is sheer pace, where lap times, ideally across a range of tracks, are used to determine merit.
Just about everyone who races will acknowledge that racing is an expensive sport. Realistically, even if you do all your own mechanical work, when you race multiple times per year you end up spending thousands of dollars on tires and fuel and entry fees.
While the new Mk 5 Supra street car hasn’t been revealed, Toyota did something arguably better by showing the new car in racing form at the Geneva Motor Show.
Race cars are expensive by some measures, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a value equation at work. By some measures, value in a race car comes down to speed/cost.
The development and funding of top-level, and now mid-level, race car development and racing series are heavily influenced by car manufacturers. Racing is expensive, so support is needed from companies that benefit from the exposure racing provides.
The team at Winding Road Racing is always interested in ways to improve the racing experience. Today, we’re interested in getting your feedback on leasing and renting racing cars.
At the recent Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup race at Barber Motorsports Park, we saw an unusual crash on the start that involved contact between cars with fenders that resulted in a flip (fast forward to about 3:00 to see the pace lap and start).
Almost every week we have a customer stop by one of our shops to ask us about a project he or she has in mind: “can you upgrade my current street car in phases to be a faster track day car and then a better HPDE car and then a wheel-to-wheel race car?”
