"Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated."

The above title has been set off by quotation marks, first, because it is a quotation from Mark Twain, and second, because I didn’t want to suffer the fate of either presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin or newspaper columnist Mike Barnicle when some mean-spirited nitpicker accused me of plagiarism.

As of this writing I will be stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of WINDING ROAD Magazine. My new title will be Editor Emeritus. I have been toiling in this vineyard for two years and enjoying every aspect of the project except the regular operations meetings at our corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas. I was not cut out for regular operations meetings.

My new arrangement will allow me to write columns, car tests, and feature stories, and to appear in related videos when it is appropriate to do so. I’ll continue to judge concours d’elegance, and I’ll enter two or three vintage car rallies every year. I will devote half of my time to these pursuits. The other half will be devoted to other activities, some of them involving shotguns and bird dogs, plus a regular schedule of speeches, and a business alliance with my remarkable friend Leo-Arthur Kelmenson, which might serve to augment my income in my old age.
