2009 Toyota Matrix XRS

The Toyota Matrix appeared in 2002 as a 2003 model. The Corolla-based crossover sport-utility, as Toyota then called it, made news because it also appeared in General Motors showrooms as the Pontiac Vibe.

As a driving experience, the 2009 Matrix is acceptable. Toyota engineers have done an excellent job of producing a coordinated drivetrain that leaves no annoying gaps in forward movement, and that offers adequate power in its low-horsepower iteration and better-than-adequate performance with the larger engine, a new 2.4-liter with 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

The Matrix, which is built in California at GM/Toyota New United Motors Manufacturing, has been slicked up some on the outside. It sits about a half inch lower than the previous model and has an infinitesimally wider stance, but its profile is basically unchanged. Glossing over its four doors, Toyota is intent upon convincing the world that it is coupe-like. This may be the result of a related effort to position the Matrix as the coupe in the Corolla lineup, which does not include a two-door.
