The second round of the 2008 World Rally Championship is in the books, and another record has been broken in the process.

Jari-Matti Latvala claimed a victory for team Ford at the Swedish Rally on Sunday, becoming the youngest driver ever to claim top-honors at a WRC event. The 22-year-old Finnish wunderkind bested a record that had stood for 28-years, set when a 24-year old Henri Toivonen won the RAC Rally in 1980.

Latvia’s win capped a triumphant rally for the Ford team, which won every podium spot, as well as owning four of the top five positions. Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen took the second spot, with Gigi Galli finishing third, and Andreas Mikkelsen taking the fifth position.

World Champion and winner of the WRC’s first round in Monte Carlo, Sebastian Loeb, had been running in third place on Friday when he suffered a crash. Loeb returned for day two of the rally before engine troubles cut short his efforts.
