Getting Nasty in NASCAR: Stewart and Busch Placed on Six-Race Probation
NASCAR luminaries Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch have been placed on probation for the first six races of the season, following a Daytona dust-up this past Friday.
The two drivers were involved in an escalating series of events during the final practice for last weekend’s Bud Shootout, starting with an on-track “incident

Looks like NASCAR is serious about letting the drivers police themselves. Last year there would have been big fines and points penalties.

Frankly I'm surprised there aren't more deaths in NASCAR. What other respectable racing organization would let drivers go 200MPH-plus inside concrete walls while purposely ramming into each other?
If this happened in ALMS or F1, the drivers would lose their licenses.

Ahhh, let em beat each other up, it may make NASCRAP more exciting...

@Clint: "What other respectable racing organization would let drivers go 200MPH-plus inside concrete walls while purposely ramming into each other?

well, NASCAR doesn't. they restrict the cars to under 200 mph at superspeedways (mainly to protect the fans from flying cars, though), mandated the installation of Steel And Foam Energy Reduction barriers at all tracks the national series visit, requite all drivers to wear head and neck restraints, and designed the Car of Tommorow mainly for the purpose of making drivers safer.
and it's not like Stewart intentionally clipped Busch and sent him sliding into the inside wall at about 180 mph... he made minor contact with him, Busch slid maybe a car-width and bounced off the SAFER barrier , scrubbed off maybe 40 mph, and kept driving. the intentional contact happened at about 100 mph and still wasn't some sort of attempt to kill each other by plowing their cars into a wall.

If we all thought about this exhibition as the WWF of motor-sports and not really racing, I think we'd all agree more on the eventual outcome. Restrictor plates, all cars the same, decals that look like grills and headlights, everyone runs the same tire, a small hand full of engine suppliers. Drivers who are 50 years old and still competitive. Oh, we all know how racing improves the breed. If NASCAR believed this would they still be running carburetors? Where in the U.S. can you by a street legal vehicle with a carburetor? And the point system, in this system a win hardly matters, it's more about making the show, in most years you could place 3rd in every race and be champ. You couldn't make this stuff up. O.K. I'll get down and put my soap box away for a while. Thanks for listening.
