Believe it or not, we have few opportunities to celebrate domestic sports sedans. With only a handful of true American nameplates still in existence, the list of mouth-watering sedans is slim. Those with rear-wheel drive are even rarer, which means that when a new model comes along that combines performance, handling, and style, we’re likely to pay attention.
We certainly do that this month. We had the opportunity to sample Cadillac’s new CTS sedan on the famous Nürburgring circuit’s Nordschleife, or northern loop. This second-generation car is a proper evolution of a sedan that turned out to be the company’s calling card in its product renaissance. Whereas most companies choose to start a revival with a halo car at the top, Cadillac correctly spent its time, money, and effort on a genuine product that could be placed in the hands of many. But nobody accused it of being a poor man’s Cadillac. As Lawrence Ulrich explains in our test drive of the new model, the CTS moves even further upmarket in terms of its refinement and performance. Do BMW and Lexus buyers have an honest option in the rear-wheel-drive sports sedan market? Read our review and decide for yourself.
