According to a study by AAA, auto accidents cost Americans more than a $1,000 a year. The report said that’s 2 ½ times what congestion costs Americans, according to CNN Money.

The AAA study quantified the accidents by considering the costs from medical care, emergency services, property damage, lost productivity, and quality of life – costing a grand total of $164.2 billion annually.

The study showed that congestion costs Americans $67.6 billion annually, or $430 a person. The study aimed to “put a price tag on accidents

Another stupid insurance company and federal government statistic to capitalize on the American worker...

Bunch of crap!

FLASHPOINT

Now, do traffic accidents cause congestion or does congestion cause traffic accidents? Get back to us on that.

Jeb

Tighten down driver license acquisition and enforcement. Make driving without a license or insurance a crime on a par with DUI. Get unlicensed and uninsured drivers off the streets so that the rest of us who actually comply with the law don't have to expose ourselves to as much risk from people who shouldn't be driving, for whatever the reason.

Price of freedom. We'd all be safe and secure if we were contained in pillow-walled government living facilities.

As I said when I submitted this story to Winding Road, AAA sells insurance, so there's more than a little conflict of interest.

AAA suggests that police should ticket drivers who they observe not wearing seat belts. I always wear my belts, but that' a stupid suggestion. A better one would be to offer insurance that had a higher deductible, if you were not wearing a belt when you had an accident. They argue that not wearing belts costs money. If so, the folks who do wear belts should pay less for insurance. Don't see AAA running to implement that suggestion.

Wow! We spend hundreds of billions of dollars in the "War On Terrorism", while the deaths from terrorism would only be a drop in the bucket compared to auto accidents. Maybe some of that money (we don't have) would be best spent on preventing auto accidents.

How about actually training driver's? Nah. That makes too much sense. Let's just continue to allow folks with basically no training to drive and then spend 50+ years reinforcing their bad, unstudied, unsafe driving habits.

The vast majority of driver's don't even know how to adjust their mirrors correctly.
