Chrysler to Go All-Hybrid, Eventually

dodgezeo.JPG

Chrysler LLC president Jim Press says everything will be hybrid, according to Popular Mechanics. Eventually, every Chrysler model will be a hybrid-powered, he said, stating that the government's CAFE standards have caused automakers to go that direction.

Chrysler is the first automaker to make an announcement of this kind. He also states that Chrysler is going global and that the automaker wants to sell as many Chrysler-badged products overseas as it does in the U.S. (2.7 million).

Of course, no timeline has been set, but the automaker is looking toward the future.

I can just see Chrysler trying to sell a hybrid full-size pickup. I'm sorry, but you need to consider the application before you pick your tool.

Putting all eggs in one basket?
(a stop-gap basket at that)
But with no timeline its just good publicity.

Chartguy, GM has offered hybrid versions of full size pickups since 2004. A friend in my local car club has a 2004 model Chevy hybrid 1500. There is no problem with doing a hybrid full size pickup. They don't use the electric motor to drive them like a Prius, but rather use it to assist accelleration and to restart the engine when you are sitting at a traffic light and it goes green. He doesn't get 30 mpg with it, but he gets almost 20 mpg inhis commute compared with something more like 12 or so if he had a conventional truck.

The pickups GM offered before were, technically, gas-electric vehicles, but little of that application was put into improved fuel economy. I am surprised by Press's proclamation. Chrysler seemed to bank on diesel power.
