Auto Club 500: Mark Martin’s 700th Start
This Sunday’s Auto Club 500 will mark veteran NASCAR driver Mark Martin’s 700th career start.
The Arkansas native will be driving the U.S. Army No. 8 car this year. He started his first Cup race on April 5, 1981 at North Carolina’s North Wilkesboro Speedway, where he finished 27th.
Since then, Martin has won 35 races, 41 poles, and scored 239 top-five finishes, according to the Los Angeles Times. From 1988 to 2007, Martin had 621 consecutive starts. This year, his is splitting racing duties with 23-year old Aric Almirola.
"It's not really how many races you started that matters, it's how fast you went," Martin said. "I have to thank each and every crew chief and each and every crew guy that played a part in everything we were able to do over the past 20-plus seasons."
