Honda Reports Record North American Sales Figures

Despite the seemingly unending talk of the weakening market in the U.S., Honda is reporting record high profits for North American sales.

The Japanese automaker saw its regional sales rise by 2.1 percent for the North American market, capping off a third-quarter that saw 481,000 vehicles sold. Strong sales worldwide and favorable exchange rates have Honda predicting an operating profit of $8.36 billion when the fiscal year ends on March 31. That number would represent an 8 percent gain over last year, and another record for Honda.

Honda has benefited greatly from U.S. consumers looking for vehicles that offer better fuel economy. The company doubled the number of Fit sales in the U.S. to 56,432, while sales of the CR-V rose nearly 30 percent to 219,160.

Even with the predicted contraction of the North American market in 2008, Honda is forecasting a sales growth of 2 percent for the year.
