2008 Detroit Auto Show: Buick Brings Sultry Riviera Concept Over from China

buick-riviera-concept-hl.jpg

General Motors has released a new set of images starring its Buick Riviera Concept that originally debuted last year at China’s Shanghai Motor Show. GM is planning to bring the sexy gull-wing along to the stand this year at Detroit as well.

With Buick still making big waves over in China, GM has said that the Riviera will help to set the design tone for the brand in upcoming models. Though the Buick brand is having a much tougher go of it here in its homeland, we can’t help but to be excited about seeing the Riviera make the journey here.

Below you’ll find galleries of the new studio images of the Buick Riviera Concept, as well as some live shots from Shanghai. Hold tight as our live coverage in Detroit kicks off on Sunday.

GM is quietly laying the ground work for it's future. Unfortunately, you will see more and more Chinese content start popping up in domestic brands until 10 years from now 50% of all domestic vehicles will come complete from China. Regardless of UAW concessions, they will never be able to compete with $.50 / hr labor. I know, I've watched by industry become domestically extinct.

I thought GM indicated in the past they had no intention of selling the Riviera in the US.

You know, Buick should thumb its nose at the US. Nothing will get an American riled up more than a little bit of nationalism. Buick could say, "I thought you didn't love me anymore, so I found a new man." The new man being the Chinese marketplace. And by the way, I've been doing crunches.

That will get people interested.

I think the design is fantastic. Lose the gullwing doors and you have a practical coupe that is beautiful. Build it on the CTS platform in Lansing.

Chinese Buicks are awesome. But I have to agree with detroit9000. Leave the nice Buicks in China. Just like how Ford leaves the nice Fords in Europe. Jealousy and forbidden fruits engender desire.
