eBay Auction of the Day: 1978 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser Troopy

There are eBay auctions that we feature, of cars that are historically important, cars that are excessively weird, and sometimes just cars that we really, really want. This 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser troop carrier definitely falls into that last category.

Looking something like a cross between a military Jeep and a school bus with a tent on top, the Troopy is nothing but pure motoring awesomeness. Just the fact that the seller offers up this truck as a possible daily-driver is proof that he’s making a mistake by putting it up for auction. Fortunately for him, he keeps the Toyota near his house in New Zealand, making it all but impossible for us to christen this FJ as the official WINDING ROAD Recreational Vehicle and Mobile Office.

This makes me think that Toyota's current FJ could use different wheelbase sizes. Or a pop top.

What's a Toytoa?

Corco

Reilly,

That would make that car immensely more desireable. Give it some actual utility, a soft top, and a long wheelbase version and I'd go buy one.

Richard Peoples

here's your soft top version...

you'd have to do the stretch thing though :) I have seen a stretched Hummmer Limo, maybe a stretched FJ Cruiser will be next.

I presently own a new voodoo blue FJ Cruiser sort of nostalgic for me, bought a new blue FJ40 in '78, great vehicle then, think I like the new one now better though. Older bones and joints enjoy the softer ride and the old one didn't have air conditioning. Would love to own the "Troopy" though, what a neat vehicle
Regards,
Richard

Richard- That FJ convertible looks great sans the rims, as they make the car look "ghetto".

Jonathan Fung [Gotakon]

I remember that FJ convertible. But I still didn't really care much for it.

And sorry if I'm just ignorant, but what is the purpose of the tent-roof on this Land Cruiser? Just more headroom when at rest?

I want my refrigerator with a soft top that flips up too, please...
