‘08 NAIAS - Live Shots of Lincoln’s MKT Concept

mkt.jpg

This is Detroit, but Lincoln apparently felt its MKT concept was worthy of a Hollywood premiere. Perhaps that's why, at its official unveiling this morning at the Detroit auto show, the conceptual crossover was piloted down a red carpet amidst the flashing strobes of simulated (and real) paparazzi.

Sure, both the "whale-like" front grille and the "bustleback" tail are certainly the subjects of debates (you'll either love or hate it), but the car's overall look is more along the lines of a tall limousine - albeit one with a rear hatch. That hatch opens to show an excessive amount of chrome hardware, a trait that's carried through the interior via chrome-plated arm rests, pedals, instrumentation, etc.

(Click through for more on the MKT concept and a gallery of photos from its reveal)

Peter Horbury, executive director of Ford's American design staff, noted the car does presently seat four, but could (given it's Ford Flex underpinning) hold as many as seven. We're sure the wheelbase allows for such seating, but the tumblehome imposed by the raked C-pillar certainly does not.

One interesting point lies with the EcoBoost motor itself. Yes, it's the same twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 we told you about earlier, but during his speech, FoMoCo executive vice president Mark Fields spouted much higher horsepower and torque figures. According to Fields, the motor is rated for somewhere close to 400 horsepower when driven on either premium or E85 fuels. The 345-horsepower figure we previously cited remains for when the MKT is fed regular pump gas.

That said, the styling on this is still very much conceptual, as evidenced by the center console wrapping upwards into the ceiling aft of the second-row seating. Horbury wouldn't say much about the production version, outside of saying the MKT carries many cues that will be "incorporated into production."

We're sure some tweaks will be made, but what would you change on the MKT? Let us know your likes and dislikes in the comments section below.

Wow. There's not one attractive angle on this car. I'm stunned.

It looks like the Hot Wheels Unobtainium 1 casting. The Hot Wheels version was released in 2006.

It appears that most of the world's automobile manufacturers are in a contest to see who can design the ugliest car of all time. That being said, I think they can just quit trying to do ugly and come out with some attractive designs. This thing wins the ugly crown hands down!
