Insure.com Finds Highest Premiums Among Top 20

business-money_in_hand_1.gif

Insure.com has rated the Dodge Ram as the most expensive automobile to insure in 2008, among the 20 top-selling vehicles. Rounding out the top three are the Chevy Silverado and the Toyota Prius.

In its fourth annual list, Insure.com rated the Chrysler Town & Country as the least expensive vehicle to insure.

(More details after the jump)

Now, the methodology here suggests that your premium can be, and likely is, different. They used the 20 best-selling cars as of May 2007 according to Reuters. They used the benchmark of a 40-year old male who owns a home, possesses a bachelor’s degree and has a clean driving record. The imaginary fellow works as a hospital administrator and drives 10 miles roundtrip to work.

The quotes were averaged from four different insurance companies across three cities; one on the East coast, West coast, and Midwest.

Our advice? Check what the premium would be for you, personally, before purchasing a vehicle.

That's not going to help Ram sales...

Absolutely good advice to check your premium more specifically before buying a car. Our list is certainly nothing more than an overview, including only the top 20 bestselling cars. We just want to give people a sense of which types of cars fall into which insurance price classes, and remind everyone that insurance is certainly a cost factor to consider when buying a new car.

Pocky Is God

I work in Insurance and I HATE THIS QUESTION SO MUCH. There is no easy way to answer it so I am desperate to find out how they calculated their list. What rates they used, loss statistics, etc.

BigWill

If one reads closer, there's the following quote: "Insure.com has calculated the most and least expensive autos to insure among the nation's 20 best-selling vehicles." So, the 10th most expensive car to insure is the Dodge Caravan with an average premium of $1,165. The 10th least expensive car to insure is a tie between the Toyota Camry and RAV4 with an average premium of ... $1,165.

Time for a do over.

Doug

what person in the position of Hospital Admin. lives anywhere close to 5 miles from the urban craziness... aren't they usually in the hills??? inconsistent hypotheticals

BigWill, ever heard of rounding?

Mark

Why is the Prius so expensive to insure? It's not very expensive, it certainly isn't sporty, and Toyota owners are about the dullest people around. It's rates should be low.

BigWill

andrew, what does rounding have to do with it? The whole "most expensive" and "least expensive" business of this list is flat out misleading, as evidenced by the premiums being the same for the 10th most expensive and 10th least expensive cars. They should have simply ranked the cars from 1st to 20th and not broken this into two distinct lists.
